Noosa has the basics to be a successful tourist town but has some drawbacks. In a warm climate with a north facing beach and adjoining national parks it is well situated to capitalise on it’s wonderful natural attributes. However an over emphasis on green space and avoidance of urbanisation has detracted from it’s future desirability.

Anti development mayors and de-amalgamation have restricted the area’s potential but conversely strengthened real estate values. The certainty of more visitors will further impact congestion.

Noosa in 2040 could expect more of the same when a lack of infrastructure will hamper tourism. Without change, the Council will continue to be under-resourced and unable to adequately maintain the shire; it will not be able to fund improvements and could be forced to rejoin Sunshine Coast Council.

But I think South East Queensland will host the 2032 Olympics and this will change everything. The Liberal National Party will gain Federal, State and Council control. There will be a greatly improved Sunshine Coast rail service and a major revamp of Noosa – including better road design. A linking bridge from Noosa Woods to Noosa Parade will facilitate a tramway connecting Noosa Junction, Hastings Street, Gympie Terrace and Tewantin.

Rather than become an elite backwater, Noosa in 2040 will once again be the expensive Jewel in the Crown.

About Noosa 2040

Noosa 2040 is a rolling project inviting the community to contribute future scenarios for Noosa from any viewpoint – wishful, realistic or a poetic flight of fancy. Send your vision to editor@opennoosa.org. As always contributions do not necessarily reflect the view of the editorial team.

After a privileged education in Sydney I worked primarily in the Agricultural industry, firstly as an Agronomist and then as a Branch Manager for various agencies (also a small business owner in Mooloolaba during 1980's). After retiring in 2005 and moving to Sunrise Beach we now live at Peregian Springs. Happily married with two children and four grandchildren we enjoy a relaxed lifestyle. Family connections in Europe facilitate our love of travel.
